Ever fancied something short and snappy to fill a few hours of the day? Be that on the beach, a long car drive or maybe a hair appointment? Have we got the books for you. Read on for our favourite books you can read in a day.
Short Fictions
If you’re fed up of fictions that go on forever then I have the perfect fix for you – short (but equally brilliant) books that come in at under 200 pages. These pocket size beauties will keep you occupied for the perfect amount of time and of course leave you longing for more.
Open Water – Caleb Azumah Nelson
Assembly – Natasha Brown
Giovanni’s Room – James Baldwin
Open Water featured in one of our boxes earlier this year so you can get a copy along with some other great gifts here. Both Assembly and Giovanni’s Room are available through affiliate links with Bookshop.org here and here respectively.
Books in Verse
Now these three are a bit special. While they’re all longer than the above books mentioned in the fiction section, these books written in verse, in prose deserve a special place on this page.
I’ve found that reading books in verse gives them a rhythm, gives them a certain structure and speed to them. There’s an excited urgency to them, enhanced by the speed you’ll turn the pages since they’re not full of text but perfectly placed verses instead.
The Black Flamingo – Dean Atta
Clap When You Land – Elizabeth Acevedo
The Poet X – Elizabeth
The Black Flamingo featured in one of our earlier boxes, now sold out but you can grab a copy through my affiliate link with Bookshop.org here. Clap When You Land is still available in one of beautiful boxes here and The Poet X can also be found through the same affiliate link here.
Graphic Novels
Graphic novels are another type of book I bet you didn’t expect to see here! But I definitely think they deserve their place on a list of quick reads.
Despite graphic the below all coming above the 200 page limit, like the books written in first, you’ll zoom through these quicker than your average book.
And of course my recommendation for graphic novels has to be..
Heartstopper – Alice Oseman
It’s the Netflix series that has taken the world by storm and with good reason too. Both the novels and TV series alike are heartwarmingly beautiful, easily inclusive and feel like you’re getting a hug from a book.
I’ll always recommend a book over a film or TV series, so make sure you pick up the first one from here through my affiliate link.
And if you’re looking for some non-fiction mini’s to sink your teeth into, take a look at my list of favourite mini books here.
P.S. Affiliate links just mean a small proportion of the sale goes to keep these recommendations coming to you, they’re no more expensive than you’d normally pay. If you don’t like shopping online then make sure to check out your local bookshop for them too! 😊
