One sentence summary: The perfect persuader for anyone looking to break up with fast fashion and reduce their impact on the environment.
Overview: Barber’s debut talks us through the real-life effects that our capitalistic and all-consuming society has on both the planet and the workers in the system. We’re walked through the whole supply chain; factory workers and their abysmal pay, fast fashion companies refusing to pay over covid and the even the global south that is forced to deal with the clothes we throw out.
Aja doesn’t shy away for calling out the fashion industry on it’s racism, fatphobia and many others issues, while adding in her own personal experiences of the above. It’s a difficult industry to break into and keep up with and it’s this need for inclusion that drives our greed for more.
Personal Thoughts:
I found this book at the perfect time and I won’t look back. Aja’s writing is harsh and truthful, the perfect wake up call in today’s world of over consumption. She details issues with numerous resources to back up and speaks with passion, this book is the perfect extension to her educating Instagram and Patreon content.
With clear and concise actions, this book is something I urge you to pick up and read. If you’ve been trying to move away from fast fashion and over-consumption but can’t quite shake it, this book will give you the final push and I promise you (and your bank account) will feel better for it.
This informative and urgent read is the book we need to read right now and it’s hard not to take action off the back of reading it.
Would I read it again? Absolutely. And I’ll keep referring back to it again and again too.
