One sentence summary: A powerful but heartbreaking classic.
Overview: Set in America in the early 1900's, sisters Nettie and Celie are born into misery and then consequentially separated to live very different lives. Their story is told through a series of letters to God and eachother as they keep their hopes alive.
Personal Thoughts: This certainly felt like a book of two halves for me. The first half was so painful to read about the pain and misery these sisters endured. Certainly difficult and distressing to read at times. Please check the trigger warnings of this book if domesitc violence and rape are triggering issues for you.
However there is alawys hope, and hope trumps all. The second half certainly healed those wounds and had me sobbing by the end. Truly beautiful and I understand why this is such a classic. If you find the first half tough, please push through. I promise it will be worth it.
Would I read it again? Yes, but only after my heart has healed again.
